civic

civic
civic 1540s, from L. civicus "of a citizen," adj. derivation of civis "townsman" (see CITY (Cf. city)). Originally mostly in civic crown (L. corona civica), a chaplet of oak leaves awarded to one who saved the life of a fellow citizen in battle; sense of "having to do with citizens" is from 1790.
