{{11}}circle (n.) c.1300, from O.Fr. cercle (12c.), from L. circulus "small ring" (Cf. It. cerchio), dim. of circus "ring" (see CIRCUS (Cf. circus)). Replaced O.E. trendel and hring. Meaning "group of persons surrounding a center of interest" is from 1714; that of "coterie" is from 1640s (a sense also found in L. circulus).
{{12}}circle (v.) late 14c., cerclen, "to shape like a globe," also "to encompass or surround," from CIRCLE (Cf. circle) (n.). From c.1400 as "to set in a circular pattern." Related: Circled; circling.
