chaplain

chaplain
chaplain (n.) mid-14c., from O.Fr. chapelein "clergyman" (Mod.Fr. chapelain), from M.L. cappellanus "clergyman," originally "custodian of St. Martin's cloak" (see CHAPEL (Cf. chapel)). Replaced O.E. capellane, from the same Medieval Latin source.
