chancel
chancel (n.) c.1300, from O.Fr. chancel, from L.L. cancellus "lattice," from L. cancelli (pl.) "grating, bars" (see CANCEL (Cf. cancel)); so called for the lattice-work that separated the chancel from the nave in a church.
