catheter
catheter c.1600, from Fr. cathéter, from L.L. catheter "a catheter," from Gk. katheter, from kathienai "to let down, thrust in," from kata "down" + stem of hienai "to send" (see JET (Cf. jet) (v.)). Earlier was cathirum (early 15c.), directly from M.L. Related: Catheterization; catheterized; catheterizing.
