catalectic (adj.) 1580s, "wanting a syllable in the last foot," from L.L. catalecticus, from Gk. katalektikos "leaving off," from kata- "down" (see CATA- (Cf. cata-)) + legein "to leave off, cease from" (see LECTURE (Cf. lecture) (n.)).
