biped (n.) "animal with two feet," 1640s, from L. bipedem (nom. bipes) "two-footed," as a plural noun, "men;" from bi- "two" (see BI- (Cf. bi-)) + pedem (nom. pes) "foot" (see FOOT (Cf. foot)).
