biopsy (n.) 1895, from Fr. biopsie, coined by French dermatologist Ernest Besnier (1831-1909) from Gk. bi- comb. form of bios "life" (see BIO- (Cf. bio-)) + opsis "a sight" (see EYE (Cf. eye)). As a verb, from 1964.
