{{11}}better (adj.) O.E. bettra, earlier betera, from P.Gmc. *batizo-, from PIE *bhad- "good;" see BEST (Cf. best). Comparative adjective of GOOD (Cf. good) in the older Germanic languages (Cf. O.Fris. betera, O.S. betiro, O.N. betr, Dan. bedre, O.H.G. bezziro, Ger. besser, Goth. batiza). In English it superseded bet in the adverbial sense by 1600. Better half "wife" is first attested 1570s.
{{12}}better (n.) late 12c., "that which is better," from BETTER (Cf. better) (adj.). Specific meaning "one's superior" is from early 14c. To get the better of (someone) is from 1650s, from better in a sense of "superiority, mastery," which is recorded from mid-15c.
{{12}}better (v.) O.E. *beterian "improve, amend, make better," from P.Gmc. *batizojan (Cf. O.Fris. beteria, Du. beteren, O.N. betra, O.H.G. baziron, Ger. bessern), from *batiz- (see BETTER (Cf. better) (adj.)). Related: Bettered; bettering.
