await (v.) early 13c., awaiten, from O.N.Fr. awaitier (O.Fr. agaitier) "to lie in wait for, watch, observe," from a- "to" + waitier "to watch" (see WAIT (Cf. wait) (v.)). Originally especially with a hostile sense. Related: Awaited; awaiting.
