Anti-American (adj.) also antiamerican, 1788 (n.), in reference to British parliamentary policies, from ANTI- (Cf. anti-) + AMERICAN (Cf. American). As an adjective by 1838. Related: Anti-Americanism "opposition to what is distinctly American," 1844.
