absence (n.) late 14c., from O.Fr. absence (14c.), from L. absentia, noun of state from absentem (nom. absens), prp. of abesse "be away from, be absent," from ab- "away" (see AB- (Cf. ab-)) + esse "to be" (see ESSENCE (Cf. essence)).
