volition (n.) 1610s, from Fr. volition (16c.), from M.L. volitionem (nom. volitio) "will, volition," from L. stem (as in volo "I wish") of velle "to wish," from PIE *wel-/*wol- "be pleasing" (see WILL (Cf. will) (v.)).
