vinyl

vinyl
vinyl (n.) plastic or synthetic resin, 1939, short for POLYVINYL (Cf. polyvinyl); not in widespread use until late 1950s. Slang meaning "phonograph record" (1976) replaced WAX (Cf. wax) (n.) in that sense.
