vermouth 1806, from Fr. vermouth, from Ger. Wermuth "wormwood," from M.H.G. wermuot, from O.H.G. wermuota (see WORMWOOD (Cf. wormwood)), name of the aromatic herb formerly used in the flavoring of the liqueur.
