untidy early 13c., "untimely, unseasonable, unsuitable," from UN- (Cf. un-) (1) "not" + TIDY (Cf. tidy). Cf. W.Fris. ontidich, M.Du. ontidich, Du. ontijdig, O.H.G. unzitich, Ger. unzeitig, Norw. utidig "untimely, unseasonable, unfavorable." Meaning "poorly cared for, not neat" is recorded from mid-14c.
