torpor (n.) c.1600, from L. torpor "numbness," from torpere "be numb," from PIE root *ster- "stiff" (Cf. O.C.S. trupeti, Lith. tirpstu "to become rigid;" Gk. stereos "solid;" O.E. steorfan "to die;" see STERILE (Cf. sterile)).
