systole (n.) "periodic contraction of the heart and arteries," 1570s, from Gk. systole "contraction," from syn- "together" (see SYN- (Cf. syn-)) + stem related to stellein "to bring together, draw in; to put" (see STALL (Cf. stall) (n.1)).
