steroid (n.) naturally occuring substance based on the carbon skeleton of sterol molecules, 1936, from sterol (1913; abstracted from CHOLESTEROL (Cf. cholesterol)) + -oid, from Gk. -oeides "-like," from eidos "form, shape" (see -OID (Cf. -oid)). Related: Steroids.
