sovereignty mid-14c., "pre-eminence," from Anglo-Fr. sovereynete, from O.Fr. souverainete, from soverain (see SOVEREIGN (Cf. sovereign)). Meaning "authority, rule" is recorded from late 14c.; sense of "existence as an independent state" is from 1715.
