siphon (n.) 1650s, from Fr. siphon (early 17c.), from L. sipho (gen. siphonis), from Gk. siphon "pipe, tube," of unknown origin. The verb is attested from 1859; figurative sense of "to draw off, divert" is recorded from 1940. Related: Siphoned; siphoning.
