scarify
scarify (v.) 1540s, "cover witch scratches," from Fr. scarifier (14c.), from L.L. scarificare (see SCARIFICATION (Cf. scarification)). The sense "cover with scars" (1680s) is a sense-shift from influence of SCAR (Cf. scar).
