refrigerate (v.) 1530s, from L. refrigeratus, pp. of refrigerare (see REFRIGERATION (Cf. refrigeration)). Related: Refrigerated; refrigerating. Earlier words in the same sense of "to make cold, to cool" were infrigiden, infrigidate (both early 15c.).
