Patagonia

Patagonia
Patagonia South American region, a name given by Europeans, originally to the Tehuelche people who inhabited it, sometimes said to be from Sp. and Port. pata "paw, animal foot," in reference to the people's llama-skin shoes; sometimes said to be from Patagon, a dog-headed monster in the prose romance "Amadís de Gaula" (1508) by Garci Ordóñez de Montalvo (which also might have yielded CALIFORNIA (Cf. California)).
