preternatural (adj.) 1570s, from M.L. preternaturalis (mid-13c.), from L. phrase præter naturam (præterque fatum) "beyond nature (and beyond fate)," from præter "beyond" (see PRETERITE (Cf. preterite)) + accusative of natura "nature" (see NATURAL (Cf. natural)).
