polytheism (n.) 1610s, from Fr. polythéisme (16c.), formed from Gk. polytheos "of many gods," from polys "many" (see POLY- (Cf. poly-)) + theos "god" (see THEA (Cf. Thea)). Polytheist first attested 1610s.
