polyglot (adj.) 1640s, from Gk. polyglottos "speaking many languages," lit. "many-tongued," from polys "many" (see POLY- (Cf. poly-)) + glotta, Attic variant of glossa "language," lit. "tongue" (see GLOSS (Cf. gloss) (n.2)).
