plage (n.) "a region," late 14c., from O.Fr. plage (late 13c.), from L.L. plagia "a plain, shore," noun use of adjective (plagia regio), from plaga "region" (see PELAGIC (Cf. pelagic)). Astronomical sense is from 1949.
