pickaxe (n.) early 15c., folk etymology alteration (influenced by AXE (Cf. axe)) of M.E. picas (mid-13c.), via Anglo-Fr. piceis, O.Fr. pocois (11c.), from M.L. picosa "pick," related to L. picus "woodpecker."
