orison late 12c., from Anglo-Fr. oreison, O.Fr. oraison "oration" (12c.), from L. orationem (nom. oratio) "speech, oration," in Church L. "prayer, appeal to God," from orare (see ORATOR (Cf. orator)). Etymologically, a doublet of oration.
