oft (adv.) O.E. oft "often, frequently," from P.Gmc. *ofta- "frequently" (Cf. O.Fris. ofta, Dan. ofte, O.H.G. ofto, Ger. oft, O.N. opt, Goth. ufta "often"), of unknown origin. Archaic except in compounds (e.g. oft-told), and replaced by its derivative OFTEN (Cf. often).
