nap
{{11}}nap (n.1) "downy surface of cloth," mid-15c., from M.Du. or M.L.G. noppe "nap, tuft of wool," probably introduced by Flemish cloth-workers. Cognate with O.E. hnoppian "to pluck," ahneopan "pluck off," O.Swed. niupa "to pinch," Goth. dis-hniupan "to tear."
{{12}}nap (n.2) "short spell of sleep," c.1300, from NAP (Cf. nap) (v.). With take (v.) from c.1400.
{{12}}nap (v.1) O.E. hnappian "to doze, sleep lightly," of unknown origin, apparently related to O.H.G. hnaffezan, German dialectal nafzen, Norw. napp. Related: Napped; napping.
{{13}}nap (v.2) "to furnish with a nap, raise the nap of," 1610s, from NAP (Cf. nap) (n.1).
