multiplication (n.) mid-14c., from O.Fr. multiplicacion (12c.) "multiplication, duplication; multiplicity, diversity," from L. multiplicationem (nom. multiplicatio), noun of action from pp. stem of multiplicare (see MULTIPLY (Cf. multiply)). Mathematical sense is attested from late 14c.
