jelly (n.) late 14c., from O.Fr. gelee "a frost; jelly," lit. fem. pp. of geler "congeal," from L. gelare "to freeze," from gelu "frost" (see COLD (Cf. cold)). As a verb, c.1600, from the noun. Related: Jellied; jellying.
