intolerant (adj.) 1735, from L. intolerantem (nom. intolerans) "not enduring, impatient, intolerant; intolerable," from in- “not” (see IN- (Cf. in-) (1)) + tolerans, prp. of tolerare “to bear, endure” (see TOLERATION (Cf. toleration)). Of plants, from 1898. The noun meaning "intolerant person or persons" is from 1765.
