inflammation (n.) "redness or swelling in a body part," early 15c., from M.Fr. inflammation and directly from L. inflammationem (nom. inflammatio) "a setting on fire," noun of action from pp. stem of inflammare (see INFLAME (Cf. inflame)). Literal sense in English from 1560s.
