idolatry (n.) mid-13c., from O.Fr. idolatrie, from V.L. idolatria, shortened from L.L. idololatria (Tertullian), from Eccles. Gk. eidololatria "worship of idols," from eidolon "image" (see IDOL (Cf. idol)) + latreia "worship, service" (see -LATRY (Cf. -latry)).
