holly

holly
holly mid-15c., earlier holin (mid-12c.), shortening of O.E. holegn "holly," from P.Gmc. *hulin- (Cf. O.S., O.H.G. hulis, O.N. hulfr, M.Du. huls, Du., Ger. hulst "holly"), cognate with M.Ir. cuilenn, Welsh celyn, Gael. cuilionn "holly," probably all from PIE root *kel- "to prick" (Cf. O.C.S. kolja "to prick," Rus. kolos "ear of corn"), in reference to its leaves. French houx "holly" is from Frankish *huls or some other Germanic source.
