gneiss

gneiss
gneiss 1757, from Ger. Gneiss "type of metamorphic rock," probably from M.H.G. gneist "spark" (so called because the rock glitters), from O.H.G. gneisto "spark" (Cf. O.E. gnast "spark," O.N. gneisti).
