gnash
gnash early 15c., variant of M.E. gnasten "to gnash the teeth" (c.1300), perhaps from O.N. gnastan "a gnashing," of unknown origin, probably imitative. Cf. Ger. knistern "to crackle." Related: Gnashed; gnashing.
