Harold masc. proper name, O.N. Haraldr, O.Dan., O.Swed. Harald, from P.Gmc. *harja-waldaz "army commander." For first element, see HARRY (Cf. harry); second element is related to P.Gmc. *waldan, source of O.E. wealdan (see WIELD (Cf. wield)). It shares an etymology with HERALD (Cf. herald).
