echinoderm

echinoderm
echinoderm 1835, from Mod.L. Echinodermata, name of the phylum that includes starfish and sea urchins, from Gk. ekhinos "sea urchin," originally "porcupine, hedgehog" (see ECHIDNA (Cf. echidna)) + derma (gen. dermatos) "skin" (see DERMA (Cf. derma)); so called from its spiky shell.
