dissection (n.) 1580s, from M.Fr. dissection, from M.L. dissectionem (nom. dissectio), noun of action from pp. stem of L. dissecare "cut in pieces," from dis- "apart" (see DIS- (Cf. dis-)) + secare "to cut" (see SECTION (Cf. section)).
