diffraction 1670s, from Fr. diffraction (17c.) or directly from Mod.L. diffractionem (nom. diffractio), noun of action from pp. stem of L. diffringere "break in pieces," from dis- "apart" (see DIS- (Cf. dis-)) + frangere "to break" (see FRACTION (Cf. fraction)).
