covet mid-13c., from O.Fr. coveitier (12c., Mod.Fr. convoiter) "covet, desire, lust after," influenced by con- words), probably ultimately from L. cupiditas "passionate desire, eagerness, ambition," from cupidus "very desirous," from cupere "long for, desire" (see CUPIDITY (Cf. cupidity)).
