contradiction late 14c., from O.Fr. contradiction or directly from L. contradictionem (nom. contradictio) "a reply, objection, counterargument," noun of action from pp. stem of contradicere, in classical L. contra dicere "to speak against," from contra "against" (see CONTRA (Cf. contra)) + dicere "to speak" (see DICTION (Cf. diction)).
